The Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) has announced a grant and loans package to support electrical waste recycling companies during the coronavirus crisis.
Support Fund For Electrical Waste Recycling
As many waste recycling centres are closed and electrical waste collections have reduced, there has been a reduction in the flow for reuse and recycling. The “Support Grants and Loans Package” will support the continuation of the UK electrical waste recycling system as the sector copes with the impact of COVID-19.
The funding provides £5 million pounds in interest-free loans to waste treatment facilities and £0.6 million pounds in grants to charities that organise reuse. The WEEE Fund will be allocated on behalf of the 2019 Compliance Fee Advisory Panel, following consultation with electrical waste recycling organisations.
Scott Butler, Executive Director of the WEEE Fund, said: “This fund that has been made available to offer help and support to the electrical waste recycling sector as a result of the coronavirus. The loans are backed 100% by the WEEE Fund which is funded by the producers of electricals. We have designed the grant application process to ensure speedy funding allocation, and included support for recycling and reuse organisations.”
Rebecca Pow, Environment Minister, said: “Across the waste sector, I am grateful for the enormous effort that is being put in to keep services running; in these unprecedented times I understand the pressure that the industry is under. This fund helps it to weather the effects of the Covid-19 outbreak, and enables people to do the right thing by recycling more.”
