When it comes to choosing a van to hire, size really does matter! Establishing the appropriate size for a rental van depends on what type of work you’ll be doing with it. Read our Go Hire It guide to how big a hire van do I need for more information…
How big a Hire Van do I Need?
If you only carry a large load occasionally you might choose a smaller, more economical van rental for your day to day use and then just rent a bigger van when you need one. You need to consider how many passengers you carry and where you are driving; are there any height restrictions? Will you be travelling into congestion or Low Emission Zone?
Small van
Your average small van has a payload of 600-750kg, making it perfect for carrying packing boxes, tools and even smaller items of furniture.
Panel van
If you are after something a bit bigger, a panel van has a payload of 1,000-1,400kg. They are popular for electricians, plumbers and delivery firms. A short wheel-based van offers a fairly large load compartment without being much bigger than a car and gives good fuel economy. For the ultimate in load carrying capability, how about an extra-long wheel-based van?.
Luton van
A Luton van has a payload of 1,000kg and it also offers a more versatile storage space than a panel van. Its enclosed body extends over the top of the cab, giving it even bigger capacity and huge load space. Unlike panel vans, the entire load compartment sits above the wheels, so wheel arches don’t cut down your space. That is why Lutons are the van of choice for removal firms. Remember that as they are quite high off the ground you may need a Luton van with a tail lift.
